Adrienne Marcus Raja

Adrienne Marcus Raja makes documentary and experimental works.

Adrienne identifies herself as Kelabit and Hainanese, from Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo and has been residing in Canada since 2008. She holds a Masters of Fine Arts in Documentary Media from Ryerson University and a Bachelor of Arts specializing in Mass Communication and Television Production from Curtin University of Technology.

Adrienne is particularly interested in using video and other media to explore the cause and effect of disappearing communities and new communities. Her obsession with the documentation of memory, history, and identity is reflected in her artistic endeavors. In her installations, she explores and questions the fragile connections between her own displaced identity and her traditional community through the combination of artifacts, images or spoken narrative. She is in a continuous cycle of trying to find time to edit video footage either at home or at TSV (Trinity Square Video).

Adrienne is currently a Media Artist with Jumblies Theatre. She started as an intern in 2013 made possible by Toronto Arts Council through Platform A, and was the first recipient of Jumblies’ Al Levitt Memorial Award in 2014. She has documented many events for Jumblies and Offshoots, taken part in many workshops, initiated and contributed to many creative and research projects and activities.

Through imagineNATIVE + LIFT mentorship program in 2013 and after years of working within the digital video realm, most of Adrienne’s current personal artistic concentration is centred around celluloid film and photography which she continues to explore within the darkroom facilities of LIFT (Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto) and G44 (Gallery 44). Other places that she would love to find the time to hang out is Cinecycle,Niagara Custom Lab, Film Rescue, Double Negative Collective, Film Farm, etc...

Working with Jumblies Theatre, Adrienne looks forward to work and experiment with community members with their oral stories and transform them through the creation of miniature worlds and light-sensor audio modules. Also, she loves puppets, embroidery, and also instant noodles.
