Among the Kelabit people of the highlands of Sarawak, Malaysia, repbun is the word for smoke. The hearth in a traditional Kelabit longhouse is known as the tetel. This series highlights household items and traditional activities, including socializing and resting, centered on the tetel.
The Kelabit make up one of the smallest indigenous groups in Malaysia. As a Kelabit, but one with very little knowledge of the Kelabit language, I am using this installation to explore memory, and to highlight the increasing irrelevance of traditional household objects to modern Kelabit living.
